Molokini with kids

Molokini works for children, non-swimmers and older travelers, as long as you pick the right boat. The catamarans from Maalaea are made for it; the rafts from Kihei often are not.

A family Molokini morning is mostly about the boat: shade, a restroom, life vests in small sizes, crew in the water and a lunch the kids will eat. The crater itself is deep but sheltered, and the flotation provided means nobody has to be a strong swimmer.

Here is what each boat allows, and how to make the morning easy.

The quick answer

Choose a catamaran from Maalaea. The Four Winds II welcomes all ages, with life vests for young children, sea boards and a glass-bottom viewing room. Pacific Whale Foundation lets up to three children 12 and under go free per paying adult on its Viator listing. Redline does not recommend its rafts for children under 8, pregnant women or fragile travelers.

Is Molokini good for kids?

Yes, on a catamaran: the crater is sheltered, the fish are close to the surface, and the big boats bring flotation, shade and restrooms.

"Great for families with small kids," a Four Winds II guest wrote in September 2026, praising the life vests, floating vessels and wildlife placards. A Malolo family with ages from 7 to 63 had a great morning. Remember that Molokini itself is not guaranteed: if it is rough, the boat goes to a calmer reef, which is often easier for children anyway.

What is the minimum age for a Molokini tour?

It depends on the boat: the Four Winds II takes all ages, while Redline does not recommend its raft trips for children under 8.

Which Molokini boat is best for young children?

The Four Winds II: it takes all ages, has life vests for young children, sea boards with clear bottoms and a glass-bottom viewing room for anyone who does not want to swim.

The glass-bottom room lets toddlers and non-swimmers watch the fish without getting wet. One guest noted that the view is limited because the boat moors further out, but it is still a nice option. Crew in the water and a snorkel lesson before you go in help first-timers.

Can non-swimmers snorkel at Molokini?

Yes, with a flotation belt or vest, which every tour provides, but stay close to the boat because the crater is deep.

"I'm not the best swimmer at age 70 but they had all kinds of options," a Pacific Whale Foundation guest wrote, listing flotation belts, life jackets, paddle boards and staff in the water as lifeguards. On the Four Winds II, sea boards let you float and look down. Non-swimmers should hold on to a board or noodle and keep a crew member in sight.

Turtle stops are usually shallower and calmer than the crater.

Is Molokini OK for seniors?

Yes on a catamaran, if you can manage a boat ladder; avoid the rafts if you have back problems or feel fragile.

You climb back aboard by a ladder, so ask the crew for a hand. Reviews vary: one Pride of Maui guest felt the crew made no effort to help seniors and those using canes, while Malolo guests praise crews who helped everyone on and off the boat. The Alii Nui asks for a moderate fitness level. Redline says its rafts are not recommended for elderly or fragile people, pregnant women or anyone with back or neck problems.

Is a raft OK with kids?

For older, confident children yes; for young kids a catamaran is easier.

A June 2026 Express guest called the two-hour trip the perfect length of time with kids, which is its big advantage. But the rafts are bumpy and wet, and the Express has no restrooms. The Redline raft is not recommended for children under 8.

  • Book the first departure, early in your stay.
  • Put mineral sunscreen and a rash guard on the kids before boarding.
  • Ask for small masks and life vests at the fitting.
  • Pack a towel and a warm layer: see what to bring.
  • Tell the crew about dietary needs when you book.
