Maalaea or Kihei for Molokini?

Molokini trips leave from two places: Maalaea Harbor for the catamarans and Kihei Boat Ramp for the rafts. The harbor you pick decides the boat, the ride and what you pay to park.

You cannot drive to Molokini, and none of the tours here includes hotel pickup, so the harbor is part of the plan. Maalaea Harbor sits on the isthmus between west and south Maui. Kihei Boat Ramp is on South Kihei Road, much closer to the crater.

The short version: Maalaea for comfort, meals and families; Kihei for speed, small groups and free parking.

The quick answer

Kihei Boat Ramp (2800 S Kihei Rd) is closest: rafts reach Molokini in about 15 minutes and parking is free, but the ride is bumpy and the 2-hour rafts have no restrooms. Maalaea Harbor has the big catamarans, with shade, restrooms and meals, and a longer, smoother ride; parking is metered and guests report about $3 an hour.

Which is better for Molokini, Maalaea or Kihei?

Maalaea for catamarans, comfort and children; Kihei for a fast raft, a small group and free parking.

How long is the boat ride to Molokini?

From Kihei Boat Ramp, about 15 minutes; from Maalaea it takes longer, because the harbor is further up the coast.

Redline Rafting describes a 15-minute boat ride to Molokini on its two-hour tour, and a June 2026 Molokini Express guest wrote that it takes about 15 mins to get to the crater. The operators at Maalaea do not publish a crossing time, but they build the ride into a five-hour trip, with breakfast and a briefing on the way and, in winter, humpback whales.

Where do you park at Maalaea Harbor?

In the metered harbor lots, paid by card or by scanning a QR code; guests report about $3 an hour.

The Four Winds II listing notes that the harbor meters take credit cards only. Guests have paid around $18 for a five-hour trip, and one Sail Maui guest reported their car was towed after they boarded without paying, so pay for the full time. Pacific Whale Foundation checks in at its store in the Maalaea Harbor Shops, next to the Maui Ocean Center, with shared parking. Quicksilver asks whale watchers to park at the Maui Harbor Shops.

Where do you park at Kihei Boat Ramp?

For free, in the lots above the ramp; the lower level is for trucks and boat trailers.

Redline tells guests to park in one of the two lots above the trailer area and look for the big red boat. Blue Water Rafting, which runs the Molokini Express, describes free parking at street level (paved on the left, dirt on the right) and a check-in at the picnic table to the right of the docks.

Which boats leave from Kihei Boat Ramp?

The rafts: Redline's five-hour small-group trip at 7:00 AM and Blue Water Rafting's two-hour Molokini Express at 10:30 AM.

The Molokini Express caps groups at 24 and snorkels the crater and, conditions permitting, the Back Wall. Its listing states there are no restrooms on the rafts. Redline says its five-hour trip has a bathroom on board.

Short on time? The Molokini Express is a two-hour trip from Kihei.

Which harbor is closer to my hotel?

From Kihei, Wailea and Makena, the boat ramp is closest; from West Maui, Maalaea is the nearer of the two.

Maalaea is a short drive from Kihei and Wailea too, so south Maui visitors can choose freely. Early check-ins (5:45 AM for the Malolo) mean leaving in the dark, and one Four Winds guest found the morning traffic and the walk from the parking lot a bit stressful, so allow extra time.

Molokini sits about 2.5 miles off Makena, closest to the Kihei side.

Is the ride from Kihei rough?

It can be: rafts are fast, bumpy and wet, especially later in the morning when the wind picks up.

One Express guest called it a very bumpy and adventurous (albeit uncomfortable) boat ride; others loved it. Redline does not recommend its rafts for pregnant women, people with back or neck problems, or elderly or fragile people. If that is you, or you get seasick, the bigger boats from Maalaea are the safer choice.

Prefer shade and a restroom? The Pacific Whale Foundation catamaran adds a turtle stop and a BBQ lunch.
